- Georgia’s current obesity rate is 28% (obesity defined as 30 lbs. over a healthy weight).
- Georgia’s estimated obesity rate by 2030 is 53% (USA Today, 9/19/12)
- Current estimates put the medical costs of obesity at more than $147 billion.
- The costs of preventative healthcare relating to obesity could rise by $48 to $66 billion in the next two decades to a total of over 200 billion. (CDC, 2008).
- Researchers have shown that as weight increases to the level of overweight and obese, the risks for the following preventable conditions also increases:
- Coronary heart disease
- Type 2 diabetes
- Cancers (endometrial, breast, and colon)
- Hypertension (high blood pressure)
- Dyslipidemia (for example, high total cholesterol or high levels of triglycerides)
- Stroke
- Liver and Gallbladder disease
- Sleep apnea and respiratory problems
- Osteoarthritis (a degeneration of cartilage and its underlying bone within a joint)
- Gynecological problems (abnormal menses, infertility)
