Our bodies are built for movement. From the smallest cell to the largest system, the whole body is programmed to respond quickly and positively to exercise. It doesn’t take special skill, lots of equipment, or an intense drive like an elite athlete; it just takes a commitment to yourself.
The human body naturally seeks systemic balance (homeostasis), and your fitness and nutrition habits directly impact the body’s natural self-regulating ability. The lifestyle that you maintain will either help the body find balance or magnify the imbalances. Emphasizing (or de-emphasizing) one over another – fitness, diet or the body’s natural systems - only adds to the imbalances. Your body is in its’ current condition as a result of how you trained (or didn’t train) it to be (whether you realized it or not)!
Over time, all of us develop imbalances of varying degrees. Often we lose our sense of how lean and agile the human body is designed to be by comparing ourselves with others. Ignoring exercise will increase imbalances and set you on a collision course with preventable diseases or chronic conditions like diabetes (Type 2), cancer, hypertension, heart disease, high cholesterol, low back & joint pain, decreased daily functionality and decreased athletic performance. Even those that train at high levels can increase their risk of chronic pain, injuries, inflammation and decreased performance if muscular and systemic imbalances are not addressed.
In a culture that talks about health and performance but often does little about it, we believe that knowing is equal to doing. At Bradley Fitness, we actively teach the core human skills of proper nutrition and exercise through personal accountability (your commitment to yourself). Changes do not need to take a long time. From elite athlete to working professional to stay-at-home parent, we all have the same desire to be our best. Sometimes it gets lost along the way in life, and being your best is not an accident - especially when it comes to nutrition.
Despite being so vital to our wellbeing, we are not born with the ability to know the difference between good food and bad. Our body recognizes the difference, and responds amazingly quick when given the right food, but our brains must be taught what is good and what is bad for the body. Good nutrition doesn’t ‘just happen’, bad nutrition does.
As infants, our food is provided for us, but as we grow and mature, we learn to make choices to feed ourselves. Sadly, most of us do not learn good eating behaviors and the reasons behind those habits. We believe most people default to poor food choices and poor health because they don’t really know how to choose, prepare and enjoy healthier food options. The path to good nutrition should be clearly marked, but instead, it is very confusing. In our culture, health benefits are often distorted and disregarded by advertisers, and it’s only due to the body’s amazing ability to compensate and adapt that we can survive on compromised nutrition.
There is a great price to be paid for ignoring healthier food options, and here is the evidence; growing numbers of people are being diagnosed with preventable diseases like diabetes (Type 2), cancer, hypertension, heart disease, high cholesterol, low back & joint pain, decreased daily functionality and decreased athletic performance.
This is what makes fitness and nutrition a choice, and such a powerful ‘gateway’ to changes that extend into other areas of our lives as well. Nobody would choose to be part of these grim statistics.
